Lindsay Dil

Although he has officially retired, our former managing director Lindsay Dil is keeping close contact with the family business, and the work that he loves, with a part-time role as a funeral director.

Lindsay brings invaluable experience and knowledge to his position, and helps cement the strong family atmosphere that continues to make Dil’s the exceptional and highly-regarded organisation that it is today.

The son of our founder Wilf, and father of our current managing director Stephen, Lindsay grew up with the business. He took on a full-time role in 1976 after graduating from the University of Auckland with a law degree. He had worked for the business part-time while studying and realised that, rather than a career in law, he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps.

At this stage, Dil’s was a small company operating from the Birkenhead Chapel. Lindsay worked with his father until the mid-1980s when Wilf retired and Lindsay took over as managing director. The business continued to operate on the strong traditions laid down by Wilf – but with a strong eye on changes taking in place in people’s expectation of funeral services.

Vision and innovation had always been intrinsic to the company’s operation – and never more so than when Lindsay and his father set in motion plans for the stunning facilities offered at our North Harbour Chapel. The chapel was designed to meet changing needs and the growing demand for non-religious funeral services in beautiful and memorable locations. With Lindsay at the helm, the chapel was completed in 1994 and, as a result, the company grew significantly.

Lindsay remained as managing director until 2005 when he left to serve on a three-year church mission in Ghana, West Africa with his wife Tina.
