Music has a very powerful effect on a funeral service. It doesn’t matter what style of music it is as long as it in some way reflects the character of the person who has died, or expresses your feelings or emotions for them.
During the service you might choose to play a recording of a favourite song, or have live musicians perform; perhaps an organist or pianist, a singer or choir, or, if appropriate, a piper, bugler, string quartet, or small band.
Example of songs you could choose:
- Sailing – Rod Stewart
- Time To Say Goodbye – Andrea Bocelli & Sarah Brightman
- How Great Thou Art – Howard Morrison
- I Did It My Way – Frank Sinatra
- You Raise me up – Josh Groban
- Amazing Grace – (Sung by Choir)
- The Last Farewell – Roger Whitaker
- Stranger on the Shore – Acker Bilk
- We’ll Meet Again – Vera Lynn
- Memoires – Barbara Streisand
- Morning has Broken – Cat Stevens
- Amazing grace – A lot of different artists
- Song Bird – Eva Cassidy
- Over the rainbow – Israel Kamakawiwo'ole
- Wish you Were Here – Pink Floyd
- Always Look on the Bright side of Life – Monty Python
If you’d like flowers for the service, chapel, casket or your home we can take care of it all for you. After the funeral, flowers may be left with the casket, taken home, or given to a hospital or rest home. We’ll make sure that all cards from the floral tributes are collected for you.View Our Flower Catalogue
If you choose to use pall bearers you’ll need to invite four or six people for this role. On the day we’ll guide them in their duties.
Usually families will make their own arrangements to get to the funeral; however, we can arrange hire cars for you if needed.
Ex Service Personnel
For those who have been in the services there are special options you might like to consider. At the service a flag may be draped over the casket, the ‘Last Post’ sounded and an RSA representative will offer a tribute if invited.
If a Service Persons’ tribute is to be given, we can arrange to have a bugler play the Last Post and Reveille rather than use a recording.
There are Service Persons’ burial and ash plots in some cemeteries for eligible personnel. Veterans’ Affairs New Zealand subsidises the cost of these plots and memorial plaques.
Recording the Service
If you’d like a memento of the funeral we can make an audio or video recording of the service. We are also able to offer a webcast.
Memorial Book and Attendance Pages
As a matter of course we provide a simple memorial book to help mark the funeral. Attendance pages may be included in the memorial book where you wish to have a record of those present at the service.
Some airlines offer compassionate fares for immediate family members needing to travel by air to attend the funeral. In order to qualify for these fares, it usually requires information be provided by us confirming the death, stating the relationship of the person travelling and giving the details of the funeral. Just ask as we’ll be happy to provide this.
